Evolution of Mobil 1
The first partnership between a racer and Mobil 1 was acquired as an associate sponsor for Rusty’s #27 at a 1987 Watkins Glen race. When Rusty moved to the new established Penske Racing team since 1991, his number became #2 and Mobil Stuck with him as an associate sponsor. Several Years Later [1999], Mobil 1 sponsored Jeremy Mayfield’s #12 Ford Taurus on the hood the year he joined Rusty. It was his primary sponsor until at least 2002. That season, Ryan Newman took over the #12 with Mobil 1 as a secondary among Alltel as number one, sponsor while Jeremy Mayfield transitioned to Gillett Everham Motorsports. Mobil 1 Stuck with Ryan Newman for a long time in the Cup Series. Penske Racing Switched to Dodge in 2003. During 2005, let’s not forget, that Mobil 1 sponsored the Entire Penske Racing team: Ryan Newman’s #12, then Rusty Wallace’s #2 Dodge Charger, and Travis Kvapil’s #77 Dodge Charger. At the 2006 National Feeder Division, Sam Hornish Junior acquired a sponsor + number combo of Mobil 1 and #39 Dodge Charger. If the #77 still existed in 2006 alternatively for Todd Bodine, he would have kept Mobil 1 as a Tertiary Sponsor among Kodak and Jasper. In 2007, Sam Hornish Junior began operating Ryan’s Nextel Cup Series number #12 at the National Feeder Series with Mobil 1 remaining as the prime. In the Cup Series, Sam’s number was foolishly #06 instead of even #77. That would have been a respective way to get him prepared to run Mobil 1 as a primary sponsor in the 2008 Sprint Cup Division. A sponsor + number combination of Mobil 1 and #06 was Odder than the combination of Mobil 1 and #39 It didn’t maintain a most homey look for a lot of fans. Meanwhile, Sam Hornish Junior kept Mobil 1 as his prime sponsor until the end of 2010. During 2011, Mobil 1 became a sponsor for Tony Stewart in his self established affiliation: Stewart Haas Racing among Office Depot and Old Spice [if he still Had it]. It stuck with him forever individually, until sponsoring Kevin’s new #4 Chevrolet SS livery. This was absolutely disgusting because fans are more accustomed to Tony’s #14 being sponsored by Mobil 1. Kevin drove a Mobil 1 sponsored #4 in exactly a Decade, between ’14 and ’23, with the majority of the scheme alternating from white to black, and sometimes gold. YUCK! Luckily, Mobil 1 sponsored Danica Patrick’s #10 car for 2016 and 2017. Nobody ever supported that scheme Anyhow, even with the Green. Stewart Haas switched to Ford in 2017, rather than remaining Chevrolet just to switch back in 2026. In the Midst, Josh Berry stepped in to driving the #4 Ford Mustang livery occasionally sponsored by Mobil 1 in 2024. The combo of Mobil 1 and #4 is One collab that makes Mobil 1 thus overused.
