The Walt Disney Company chose Mickey Mouse as its mascot because he was created at a critical moment in the studio’s history. After losing the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney needed a new character that he fully owned and could build his brand around. Mickey Mouse was introduced in 1928 in Steamboat Willie, one of the first synchronized sound cartoons, which helped the character quickly gain popularity. His success marked a turning point for Disney and helped establish the company as a leader in animation (Barrier, 2007).

Mickey Mouse was also chosen because of his simple design and universal appeal. His round shapes, large ears, and expressive face made him easy to animate and recognize across different cultures and age groups. His friendly, optimistic personality reflected the values Disney wanted to promote, such as imagination, happiness, and creativity. This made Mickey an ideal mascot who could connect emotionally with audiences around the world and represent the company’s identity (Thomas, 1994).

Disney also carefully chose Mickey Mouse’s outfit and colors to make him visually distinctive and practical for animation. His classic look—red shorts, yellow shoes, and white gloves—uses bold, contrasting colors that stand out clearly, especially in early black-and-white and later color animation. The white gloves were added to make his hand movements easier to see on screen, while the bright colors helped define his playful and energetic personality. His simple outfit also made him easy to reproduce in merchandise and branding. Together, his design, clothing, and color choices helped make Mickey Mouse one of the most recognizable and lasting mascots in the world (Watts, 1997).
